Information on the Skin Rash Molluscum

Molluscum is a highly contagious skin rash caused by the pox virus. The virus creates small raised bumps, or papules, that often occur in clusters. Although the bumps are painless, they can create an itching sensation. Molluscum is most common in children, as most adults have developed an immunity to the rash.
  1. Identification

    • Molluscum creates small bumps that are 2 to 4 millimeters in diameter. The bumps are close together and are often red and irritated. They may be shiny and have a flesh-colored or white head.

    Features

    • Molluscum is most commonly found on the feet, arms, hands, face and pubic area. It is spread by making contact with others who have the rash or by touching contaminated doorknobs, toys or other objects. People with molluscum can spread the rash to other parts of their body by scratching the infected area. After exposure, it can take anywhere from one to six weeks to appear.

    Solution

    • Molluscum will clear up on its own, although it may take at least six months before signs of improvement can be seen. People with impaired immune systems may have the rash for several years before it starts to go away. Because molluscum is contagious, treatment is often recommended. Treatment options include topical creams, laser removal and surgery. Crypotherapy, a procedure in which liquid nitrogen is used to remove the rash, is a common treatment. Patients should consult with a dermatologist to discuss options.

    Prevention

    • People who suspect they have molluscum should avoid touching or scratching the rash. They should also avoid shaving over the infected area or letting people use their hairbrushes, makeup or clothing. Until the rash is treated, sexual activity and contact sports such as wrestling should be avoided.

    Considerations

    • Although molluscum is not considered dangerous and won't result in long-term health problems, seeing a dermatologist is recommended, especially if the skin rash is near the eye. Having the rash treated will decrease the chances that you will spread the rash to other parts of your body or to other people.
