Types of Abdominal Skin Rashes
Abdominal skin rashes can cause discomfort and unsightly scars and blemishes. Since the abdomen has a large surface area it is subject to many different skin conditions. Rashes on the abdomen are typically caused by an infectious agent, allergic reaction, drug reaction or insect bite. Any strange marks on the skin need to be evaluated by a dermatologist who can determine their etiology and recommend appropriate treatment.-
Infections
-
Several infectious agents can cause abdominal rashes. Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles have been infected with an agent like Staphylococcus aureus. The infection can cause a rash ranging from white headed pimples to red inflammation around the hair follicles. It occurs most often in areas with skin friction from either tight clothes or shaving. Hot tub folliculitis is caused by the organism Psuedomonas that can live in contaminated spas and hot tubs.
Bites and Stings
-
Bug bites and stings are another cause of abdominal rashes. Most reactions to a bug bit are very mild and limited to the site of the bite, however some people have severe reactions. Common stings include those from bees, wasps, hornets and yellow jackets. Scabies is a rash from the infestation of the skin by small mites.
Drug Rashes
-
Drug rashes can affect the abdominal area. They vary in severity from mild redness to peeling of entire layers of skin. Rashes may appear directly after taking a drug or several days after. They can also include itchy hives. These rashes usually go away after cessation of the drug.
Contact Dermatitis
-
Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory response that occurs after direct contact with an irritating substance. These rashes are more common in people with a history of allergies. Common causes of this type of rash include poison ivy and other plants, nickel, rubber, fabrics and detergents. If you experience contact dermatitis, determine what substance is causing it so you can avoid this substance in the future.
