How to Soak in a Tub With Baking Soda

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a naturally occurring substance that living organisms naturally produce to help balance potential of hydrogen (pH) levels. These levels maintain the acid base balance within the body. Skin dryness, redness and itching signal a disruption in these levels on the skin's surface. The culprit of this many times is prolonged exposure to the sun resulting in a sunburn. Soaking in a bath with baking soda relieves pain by neutralizing painful acids on the skin and re-balancing the pH levels.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bathtub with lukewarm water. Lukewarm water is water that is slightly warmer than room temperature. You do not want the water to be too warm as it may irritate your skin further.

    • 2

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the water. The baking soda will begin to bubble. Mix around the water for five seconds to evenly distribute the baking throughout the bath water.

    • 3

Soak in the bath for 15 to 20 minutes. The bath should not exceed 20 minutes as this will excessively dry out already delicate skin.

    • 4

Allow skin to air dry. A thin, transparent layer of baking soda will remain on your skin which will continue balancing the pH of your skin throughout the day. Air drying also prevents damage to skin that traditionally occurs during the towel drying process.
