What are small airways called?
The small airways of the lungs are called bronchioles. They are the smallest branches of the bronchial tubes and are responsible for carrying air to and from the alveoli, the tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place. The bronchioles are lined with smooth muscle cells that can constrict or relax to regulate airflow. When these muscles are relaxed, the bronchioles are open and airflow is unrestricted. When the muscles are constricted, the bronchioles are narrowed and airflow is reduced. This can lead to shortness of breath and other respiratory problems.
