How to Program Air Flow on a ResMed 33051 CPAP Machine

ResMed's continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine model 33051 is marketed as the S8 Escape II CPAP. It has two programming functions that allow for the control of air flow while using the machine. First, users may program the machine's ramp time. Ramping gradually increases the machine's flow of air over a designated time period until it reaches a doctor's prescribed air flow level. A second function of the machine allows for air flow control via customized expiratory pressure relief. Expiratory pressure relief control provides breathing comfort by lowering the pressure of air flow upon exhalation.

Instructions

  1. Set Up Your Machine

    • 1

Locate the power cord inlet at the back of the ResMed 33051. Insert the power cord into the inlet and plug the other end into a power outlet.

    • 2

Locate the air tube connector jutting out from the front of the ResMed 33051. Slide the air tube over the air outlet connector. Connect the other end of the air tube to the air mask.

    • 3

Press the "Start/Stop" button at the front of the machine. The ResMed 33051's keys and liquid crystal display (LCD) back-light will light up when powered-on correctly.

    Adjust Ramp Time

    • 4

Adjust the ResMed 33051's ramp time. This can done in five minute intervals up to the maximum time allowed by your physician. Increasing your ramp time will slow the rate of air flow increase, giving you time to fall asleep before the highest flow of air is pushed through the machine into the mask.

    • 5

Press either the up arrow or down arrow button to increase or decrease the ramp time as desired. Time intervals will appear on the LCD screen. If you choose five minutes, the maximum air flow will be reached in five minutes.

    • 6

Press the "Start/Stop" button when the desired time interval appears on the LCD screen. When the LCD screen displays the word "ramping," air flow is being programmed. When ramping is complete, the designated time will display in the right corner of the LCD.

    Program Expiratory Pressure Relief

    • 7

Locate the ramp time in the right corner of the LCD screen. When this is visible, the machine is in standby ramp mode. This mode is necessary to program expiratory pressure relief (EPR).

    • 8

Press the button marked with a horizontal line. It is to the right of the up and down arrow buttons. This activates the LCD menu.

    • 9

Press the down arrow button until the words, "EPR LEVEL," appear on the LCD screen. Press the right horizontal-line button again.

    • 10

Press the up arrow or down arrow button until the desired EPR level appears on the LCD.

    • 11

Press the right horizontal-line button a third time to save the EPR setting.
