Alveoli is the basic structural and functional unit of the respiratory system where the exchange of respiratory gases (CO2 & O2) take place between blood capillaries and respiratory alveoli. Alveoli have a very thin epithelial wall covered with an extensive network of tiny blood vessels to aid diffusion to gases.
