How do you prevent pneumonia in the body?
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. While there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of getting pneumonia, there is no guaranteed way to prevent it entirely.
Here are some ways to help reduce your risk of getting pneumonia:
- Get vaccinated. The pneumococcal vaccine can help protect you from some types of bacteria that can cause pneumonia. The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is recommended for all children under the age of 2, and adults over the age of 65. The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is recommended for adults over the age of 65, people with certain chronic health conditions, and people who smoke.
- Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
- Stay home when you are sick. If you are sick, stay home from work or school to avoid spreading germs to others.
- Get enough rest. When you are sleep-deprived, your immune system is not as strong and you are more likely to get sick.
- Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet can help to boost your immune system and make you less likely to get sick.
- Avoid smoking. Smoking damages the lungs and makes them more susceptible to infection.
- Limit your alcohol intake. Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the immune system and make you more likely to get sick.
- Manage your chronic health conditions. If you have a chronic health condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease, talk to your doctor about how to manage your condition to reduce your risk of getting pneumonia.
- Get the flu shot. The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu, which can also lead to pneumonia.
