Levaquin Warnings
Levaquin is the commercial name for the Levoloxacin injection. This antibiotic injection is commonly prescribed to help treat conditions such as pneumonia, skin infections, chronic bronchitis, sinus and urinary tract infections. Although Levaquin can be beneficial for treating a variety of conditions, it is associated with a variety of warnings and side effects.-
Tendon Injury
-
The use of Levaquin increases the risk of tendon injury, rupture or inflammation both during and after use. Tendons of the shoulder, hand and at the back of the ankle are commonly affected. Although tendonitis can occur at any age, the risk of developing the condition after use of Levaquin is greatly increased after age 60. Symptoms of tendonitis include pain, swelling, difficulty moving a muscle and tenderness. Discontinue use of Levaquin, and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
Drug Interactions
-
As with many medications, Levaquin does have adverse interactions with some medications. Do not take oral or injectable steroids in conjunction with Levaquin. Blood thinners, antipsychotics, antidepressants, diabetic medications, diuretics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen have produced adverse interactions in some patients. Prior to beginning a Levaquin prescription, discuss with your physician any prescription medications, nonprescription medications, vitamins and other supplements that you take. Doctors may change or discontinue the dosage of the medication in question or choose another form of treatment instead of Levofloxacin injections.
Side Effects
-
Less severe side effects associated with the use of Levofloxacin injections are nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea and irritation at the spot of injection. Side effects that are more severe and can be extremely dangerous if left untreated include irregular heartbeat, fainting, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping and hallucinations. Immediately discuss with your doctor any side effects experienced after beginning Levaquin injections.
Attention and Coordination
-
Alertness and coordination are often affected in patients who are undergoing Levaquin treatment. Confusion, dizziness, fatigue and lightheadedness have all been reported in some patients while using Levaquin. Avoid driving cars or operating heavy machinery until it is apparent that your body tolerates the medication without any symptoms altering consciousness. Also limit or discontinue activities requiring coordination until you know how the medication will affect you specifically.
