How to Use a Nebulizer for a 9-Month-Old

Many children require treatment with nebulizers at some point in their infancies or toddler years. A nebulizer turns liquid medication into a fine mist that can be inhaled, allowing for the effective treatment of asthma, allergies and a number of other respiratory illnesses. Using this type of medical equipment on children under age 1 year presents some challenges, but most of them can be overcome with thoughtful preparation. If problems with nebulizer use persist, discuss different treatment options with your child's doctor.

Prepare the equipment as prescribed by your doctor or respiratory therapist. Make sure that all tubing and accessories are clean and that the appropriate amount of medication has been added to the dispenser cup. Position the nebulizer near an electrical outlet and a comfortable chair.

Gather your child and a favorite picture book or toy. When the child is comfortable on your lap and before the nebulizer is turned on, allow your baby to look at and touch the mask, becoming familiar with its shape and feel.

    • 3

Turn on the nebulizer, and gently place the mask over the child's mouth and nose. Soothe the child by speaking in quiet, calming tones and turning his attention to the toy or story book. Keep the mask in place until the medication is fully dispensed, or the mist stops. If the child dislikes the mask, try to hold it in place without pressing too firmly against his face.

Soothe your child in other ways according to her preferences. You can rock while using the nebulizer, sing lullabies or do other things that assure your child that the machine is nothing to be feared.
