How to Set a CPAP to 8 cm
Excessive snoring can be caused by a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring is caused when the tongue blocks the airway; which can cause pauses in breathing up to as long as 30 seconds. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, machines use a mask to apply a constant stream of air pressure to push the tongue back and keep the airway open. The machine is only effective if the mask is worn. The American Sleep Apnea Association says that most people do not wear their masks at night because the pressure causes discomfort. Adjusting the machine's pressure lessens the discomfort.Things You'll Need
- Sensor tube 2.5-3 cm
- Manometer

1
Remove the access port from the side of the air tubing. Most access ports are small white plugs that are easily removed by pulling them out. Place the plug in a safe place; the tubing will not function properly without the plug.
-
2
Insert the tapered end of the sensor tube into the access port. The tapered end of the sensor tube will be a quick-connect Luer Lock tip -- standard in medical equipment. The male end of the sensor tube screws into the female port creating an airtight seal.
-
3
Insert the other end of the sensor tube into the manometer.
-
4
Connect the air tubing to the CPAP unit and plug it into a power outlet.
-
5
Turn on the CPAP machine. Let the machine heat up for at least 15 minutes. This allows the machine to build up to its current pressure setting.
-
6
Cover the end of the air tubing that is not connected to the CPAP machine.
-
7
Check the manometer pressure; the current pressure setting will be indicated by a ball or a line on the front of the manometer.
-
8
Adjust the CPAP machine until the manometer reads 8 cm.
-
9
Save the pressure setting and turn off the CPAP machine.
-
10
Disconnect the sensor tube from the air tubing. Re-insert the plug into the port on the air tubing to prepare it for subsequent use.
