How to Refill an Activated Carbon Scrubber for Odor Removal
An activated carbon filter used within an air scrubber unit constantly cycles air through the carbon contained within, removing odors caused by common household, office or industrial sources. The carbon in the filter acts as a sponge, trapping the contaminants that cause odor, from common pet dander to small levels of pesticides. A typical filter lasts for years at a time, but eventually the carbon becomes less effective. Fortunately, changing an old carbon filter is a simple process.Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Filter sheet
- Replacement carbon filter

1
Open the filter chamber of the activated carbon scrubber by removing the Phillips-head screws securing the chamber cover in place and then lifting the cover free. Remove the gasket surrounding the filter.
-
2
Roll the filter sheet that comes with the replacement filter into a tube with a large enough diameter to fit between the carbon canister and the HEPA filter within the chamber. Slide the filter slider sheet into the scrubber canister in the center of the filter between the carbon filter sheet and the HEPA filter in the center of the canister.
-
3
Pull the HEPA filter from the center of the canister and set it to the side for return after changing the carbon filter. Pull the old carbon canister from the filter chamber and set it aside for disposal.
-
4
Lift the filter slider sheet upwards, clearing between 3 and 6 inches of the sheet from the top of the filter chamber. Open the rolled up sheet slightly at the top to create a funnel with the sheet diameter becoming smaller as it enters the filter chamber.
-
5
Roll the new carbon filter into a tube small enough to fit within the scrubber canister. Slide the new carbon filter into the chamber using the funneled filter sheet as a guide until the filter rests on the chamber bottom. Adjust the diameter of the filter so that it rests against the chamber walls. Place the funneled filter sheet within the inner diameter of the carbon filter and slide the HEPA filter into place. Lift the filter sheet free of the canister. Replace and secure the filter chamber cover to complete the activated carbon refill process.
