Guide to the Safety of Oxygen & Oxygen Systems
While oxygen systems are a crucial part of the medical world, they create a number of safety concerns if they are not used properly. Combustion and leaks are just two of the issues that can go wrong.-
Combustion
-
Since oxygen systems increase the amount of oxygen in the air around them, they make it easier for things to catch fire. Because of this, you should always stay away from open flames and avoid using any electric appliances while using an oxygen system. Put up "No Smoking" signs and always keep a fire extinguisher on hand.
Leaks
-
The high pressure within the oxygen canister can also pose a risk. When these containers begin to leak, the force of the oxygen can propel them forward at rapid speed, which can cause serious injury. If you suspect a leak or hear hissing coming from the oxygen container, leave the area immediately until the oxygen has been expelled from the tank.
Other Safety Concerns
-
Store your oxygen in the appropriate place. Always keep the canister in an upright position in a room-temperature area. Avoid stretching cords and tubing across the floor, as this may cause people to trip or damage the equipment.
