Coughing That Causes Vomiting

The common cold or allergies can obviously cause a cough, which often goes away on its own. However, if other symptoms occur, such as vomiting, this may indicate something much more serious. Various conditions can cause coughing that brings on vomiting. To properly diagnose any illness or condition, it is best to see a primary care physician or urgent care.
  1. Whooping Cough

    • A bacterial infection inside the lungs, whooping cough is extremely contagious and sometimes called the “100-day” cough. The infection is most common in children under age five; however, anyone is susceptible.

    Lung Infection

    • When the immune system is low, the normal bacteria in the mouth and throat multiplies. Then as oxygen-rich air is breathed into the lungs, this bacteria spreads, causing a lung infection. This leads to the formation of patches of mucus and pus throughout the lungs.

    Pneumonia

    • When small droplets that contain certain organisms are breathed in, pneumonia develops. These types of organisms travel through the air when someone carrying the infection sneezes or coughs. This infection is highly contagious.

    Acute bronchitis

    • Acute bronchitis develops either as a viral or bacterial infection. The infection often causes the onset of a dry cough, later causing more mucus to form. This mucus looks green, with a slight bit of blood.

    COPD

    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is referred to as COPD. Noxious particles, which commonly come from using tobacco, is what causes COPD. This is an inflammatory disease which triggers an abnormal response through the airways in the lungs. This is often diagnosed when patients regularly cough up sputum. This condition can be very serious, perhaps permanent, progressing over time.

    H1N1

    • The H1N1 virus, also known as the swine flu, is a very serious influenza. The symptoms often vary, as it is a type of flu. However, coughing and vomiting are two common symptoms along with fever, chills and sore throat.
