How to Diagnose Signs & Symptoms of Sinus Infections

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses. It can be quite painful and is categorized as either acute, defined by a sudden onset, or chronic, which is long-term and the more common of the two. Sinus infections are caused by bacteria sticking to the lining of the cells along the sinuses. To treat a sinus infection, you must properly identify it as such. There are a few telltale signs and symptoms to look for, and knowing them will help you receive the needed relief.

Instructions

    • 1

Check for pressure along the sinuses. This will result in either a headache or pain on just one side of the head. There might also be pressure in the nose, eyes or cheeks.

    • 2

Check for a cough. This is often a symptom of a sinus infection. Of course, it is also a sign of many other ailments, such as the common cold, so make sure you have other symptoms outlined as being aligned with a sinus infection.

    • 3

Check for bad breath. This is also a symptom of sinus infections. It should be bad breath that is persistent and unusual for the individual.

    • 4

Check for fever, another known symptom.

    • 5

Check for nasal congestion that cannot be "blown" out.

    • 6

Check for abnormally heavy nasal secretion.

    • 7

Check for a slight change in speaking voice, since the sinuses allow the voice to resonate. Therefore, when the sinuses are blocked, the voice will sound stuffed up.

    • 8

Consult with a doctor. You cannot be entirely sure that you have a sinus infection unless you are diagnosed by a trained professional. If you think you have a sinus infection, meet with your primary physician, allowing her to diagnose and treat you properly.
