What Are the Main Types of Influenza?

Influenza is one of the most common infections found throughout the world. At its most basic, influenza is an infection of the respiratory system caused by a virus. Typical symptoms of influenza include aches in the muscles, fatigue, soreness, a high fever and headaches. While influenza is known commonly as the flu, there are actually several different types of the illness.
  1. Influenza A

    • The influenza virus known as Type A or Influenza A is a virus that can be found in both animals and humans. Of the two, however, it is more commonly found in people. The Type A virus is most often carried by wild birds. It is transferred in people through touch or by breathing in the contaminated air. The latter is most often accomplished by the infected person sneezing and spreading their virus.

    Influenza B

    • Unlike Type A Influenza, Influenza B, or Type B is only found in human beings. Generally speaking, Type B Influenza does not carry as severe symptoms as Type A, although any respiratory infection must be observed with caution, because left untreated it can become severe. Symptoms include fever, headache and muscle pain. Treatment includes plenty of fluids and rest.

    Influenza C

    • Type C Influenza is only found in humans, and is a much more mild infection than either Type A or Type B Influenza. The most common symptoms are mild fatigue and aches and pains. Sometimes, a low fever is also present. Treatment includes rest and plenty of fluids.
