Home Oxygen Concentrator Safety
An oxygen concentrator is a type of oxygen delivery system that pulls in air from the environment. It then extracts oxygen from the air, concentrates the oxygen and stores it for delivery to a person through a nasal cannula or oxygen mask. Certain precautions need to be taken when using this equipment.-
Location
-
The oxygen concentrator needs to be located at least 6 to 8 feet away from sources of heat or flames, such as a radiant heater or kitchen. This is to reduce the risk of an accidental fire as oxygen supports burning or combustion.
Naked Wires
-
Oxygen concentrators run on electricity and have wires attached to them. Ensure that all wires are fully covered and unexposed. Naked wires can develop sparks, which can in turn cause fires when exposed to oxygen.
Power Outage
-
Individuals using oxygen concentrators need to give this information to their electricity providers, so that in the event of a power outage, their power will be restored as soon as possible.
Alternate Oxygen Supply
-
An oxygen concentrator user should have a back up source of oxygen in case there is a power outage.
Confinement
-
The oxygen concentrator produces heat when it's working. Due to this, it is important to avoid placing it in an enclosed or confined space where heat can build up to become a fire hazard. Instead, it should be located in a well-ventilated area.
Signs
-
"No smoking" signs should be posted at the entrance leading to the home where an oxygen concentrator is being used. Cigarette smoking in the presence of an oxygen concentrator may cause a fire.
