What Is a Meter Dose Inhaler With a Spacer?

A metered dose inhaler is a way to deliver respiratory medication into the lungs. A spacer is a small tube-like device that is attached to the MDI to aid in the delivery of the medication.
  1. Indications

    • An MDI with a spacer can be used when symptoms of asthma or emphysema, such as wheezing, shortness of breath or chest tightness, occur. An MDI requires a prescription from a physician

    Benefits

    • A spacer makes using an MDI easier. The medication is dispensed into the spacer before being inhaled. This helps a patient inhale completely and get a higher dose of medication delivered into the lungs, instead of the back of the throat.

    Features

    • Different spacer manufactures may have slightly different features. However, many spacers are built to make a whistling sound if inhalation is too fast. Inhaling the medication slowly helps it get deposited deeper into the lungs.

    Considerations

    • An MDI and spacer can be used with patients of any age. Spacers are available with a mask attached for infants and young children. The mask is placed over the child's nose and mouth for use.

    Warning

    • Only take the recommended or prescribed number of puffs when using an MDI and spacer. If more than one puff of medication is prescribed, wait a minute between puffs.
