Government Grants for Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapy treats a wide range of breathing and pulmonary disorders. Government grants available for this field of medicine tend to be very specific to a type of condition or institution. Respiratory therapies treat a wide range of patients, from infants who are naturally born with respiratory problems to coal miners who develop breathing disorders induced by coal dust and residue, provoking a condition called black lung disease.
  1. Coal Miners Respiratory Impairment Treatment Clinics and Services Grant

    • The Coal Miners Respiratory Impairment Treatment Clinics and Services Grant is given by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant is a project grant designed to minimize the effects of respiratory impairments in coal miners; to develop patient-oriented, integrated systems of care which assure access to appropriate therapies; and to emphasize patients' education for their capacity to implement self-care. Support is only available in areas that can demonstrate a significant number of active and inactive coal miners. State, public and private entities as well as federally recognized tribes are eligible to apply. Some certifications must be presented along with the application package to be submitted electronically through grants.gov. A pre-application coordination is also required. The range of approval for this grant is 90 to 120 days.

    Veterans Prosthetic Appliances Grant

    • Provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Administration Center, the Veterans Prosthetic Appliances Grant is designed to provide, among other appliances, home respiratory therapy supplies and home oxygen to eligible veterans seeking care. Veterans can request the supplies through their community physician or their primary care provider. If the application is refused, the applicant may appeal to the Board of Veterans Appeals. The range of approval for this grant is, on average, 5 working days.

Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program Grants

    • The Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program Grant is provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. The grant is designed to fund a scientific group that will perform investigations regarding the molecular mechanisms that cause respiratory disease risk in premature infants, as well as research on how to improve this disease within the child's first 12 months of life. Public and private institutions of higher education, minority-serving institutions and universities, small businesses, nonprofit organizations, local and state governments, Indian housing authorities and governments as well as faith- or community-based organizations are eligible to apply. Applicants must submit a letter of intent stating the proposed research, names of individuals involved and their contact information as well as any institutions involved. The range of approval for this grant varies depending on the application.
