CPAP Machines & Sinus Infections
Some CPAP (Common Positive Air Pressure) machine users complain about having sinus infections more frequently than usual citing the device as the cause of their problem. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, many patients who use the CPAP machine suffer with sinus problems such as dryness and chronic stuffiness.-
Cause of infection
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, sinus infections are caused by the common cold, bacteria , allergies, and fungal infections. These infections are not caused by the CPAP machine, however the machine can aggravate the problem if not used properly.
Daily cleaning is important
-
According to Dr. Ira Shapera, DDS and Sleep Apnea specialist, after the CPAP machine has been used it is full of bacteria and viruses. The machine chamber, hose, mask, tubes, and filter must be cleaned daily in order to avoid infections.
Poor maintenance aggravates sinus problems
-
Poor maintenance of the CPAP machine leads to bacterial growth which could aggravate sinus problems that a patient might already have. Although the CPAP machine itself does not cause the sinus infections, it can prove instrumental in the introduction of bacteria which could aggravate it.
Clean properly
-
Clean the CPAP machine every day. Wash the mask, hose and chamber daily with mild soap and distilled water. Wash, rinse and air dry the filter and the tubing once a week and wash the head gear as needed. Refill the chamber with distilled water.
Warning
-
Don't use the CPAP machine when you have a cold or a sinus infection. Seek your doctor's advice for proper medications to use to relieve sinus congestion and pain.
