Home Remedies for a Maxillary Sinus Cyst

Sinus problems are common and come from a number of causes. While the discomfort and pain of many mucus-based sinus blockages can be treated by sinus medications and irrigation, some problems are more complicated. Maxillary sinus cysts are not common, but when problematic they can be acutely painful and in need of serious treatment. Unfortunately, home remedies don't really cure them but are more effective at preventing them.
  1. Maxillary Sinus Cysts

    • The maxillary sinus lies behind the cheek, running from under the eye, next to the nose and behind the cheek bone. Although uncommon, cysts can develop in this region. Cysts are liquid-filled sacs similar to tumors and are usually benign. In many cases, people with maxillary sinus cysts are asymptomatic. In fact, one can go through life feeling no symptoms ever.

In some cases, the cyst may grow to a size that eventually blocks the sinus and prevents mucus drainage. That's when problems begin--usually throbbing, acute pain. It is possible for a cyst to become infected, especially when it blocks mucus drainage. Again, the result is acute pain. Both situations require treatment, usually surgery.

    Remedies and Prevention

    • Once a cyst is either blocking a sinus or is infected, there are no effective home remedy. The situation is critical, and medical sources such as Baylor Medical College say that surgery really is the only hope.

However, you can use home remedies to prevent a sinus cyst. Many sinus cysts result from chronic infection and allergic sino-nasal disease, so taking care of your sinus problems can possibly stave off a cyst.

Saline nasal spray or drops is a home remedy that can clear and disinfect sinuses. Mix some salt and warm water in a bottle with a medicine dropper or an empty nasal spray container. Lean your head back and spray or drop the saline up your nasal passages and into your sinuses. It's simple, requires no prescription and promotes general sinus health.

An air humidifier can prevent sinus congestion. When you're already sick with sinus blockage, steam inhalation can be helpful for loosening mucus and helping sinuses to drain.

Warm compresses around the sinus areas--on the forehead and under the eyes-- can help loosen sinus blockage, especially when used in conjunction with other sinus treatments.

    Other Treatments and Factors

    • A host of over-the-counter sinus medications as well as a number of stronger prescription options including antibiotics are available for everyday sinus blockages and medications. Taking care of sinus problems in their infancy is your best defense against sinus disease and, therefore, sinus cysts. If you're facing any kind of sinus pain or pressure, consult your physician.

In some cases, sinus cysts are a result of sinus surgery. If you are considering or have undergone maxiofacial sinus surgery, make sure to discuss the risks of cysts with your doctor. Proper pre- and post-operative care can help prevent post-surgical complications.
