What causes swolen feet?
There are many potential causes of swollen feet, also known as edema. Here are some common causes:-Lymphatic issues: If the lymphatic system, which helps drain fluid from the tissues, is not functioning properly, fluid can build up and cause swelling.
-Circulatory problems: Conditions that affect blood flow, such as chronic venous insufficiency, can lead to swollen feet.
-Kidney disease: When the kidneys are not functioning properly, they may not be able to remove excess fluid from the body, which can lead to swelling.
-Liver disease: Liver damage can cause low levels of albumin, a protein that helps keep fluid in the blood vessels. When albumin levels are low, fluid can leak out into the tissues, causing swelling.
-Heart failure: Congestive heart failure can cause fluid retention and swelling in the feet and ankles.
-Pregnancy: Swelling in the feet and ankles is common during pregnancy, especially in the later stages. This is due to increased blood volume and pressure on the veins.
-Certain medications: Some medications, such as corticosteroids, thiazolidinediones (used to treat type 2 diabetes), and some blood pressure medications, can cause fluid retention and swelling.
-Too much sodium in the diet: Consuming too much salt can cause the body to retain water, leading to swelling.
-Prolonged standing or sitting: Standing or sitting for long periods of time can cause fluid to pool in the feet and ankles.
-Heat: Hot weather or hot baths can cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to fluid retention and swelling.
-Certain medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, arthritis, and diabetes, can cause swelling in the feet.
If you experience sudden or severe swelling in your feet, accompanied by pain, redness, or warmth, it is important to seek medical attention promptly, as it could be a sign of a more serious underlying condition.
