Why might an injury to the lower spinal cord cause loss of sensation in legs?

The lower spinal cord contains bundles of nerve fibers that carry sensory information from the legs and the rest of the body up to the brain. This information includes sensations such as touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception (the sense of where your body parts are in space). If an injury to the lower spinal cord damages these nerve fibers, it can disrupt this communication and result in a loss of sensation in the legs.
