Supplements That Help Restless Legs

Restless legs syndrome is a condition that causes an irritating sensation in the legs while sitting or lying down. According to the Mayo Clinic, anyone can develop this condition at any time, but the chances increase with age.
  1. Cause

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, researchers are not sure what causes RLS but believe that it is linked to an imbalance of dopamine. This brain chemical controls the nervous system and muscle movement.

    Supplements

    • A quinine supplement may help treat RLS symptoms and leg cramping, according to the "Symptoms, Their Causes & Cures." RLS also has been linked to iron and folate deficiencies, so taking a daily multivitamin may balance these deficiencies.

    Diet

    • Natural foods may increase folate and iron levels within the body, possibly preventing and/or treating RLS. "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women" recommends eating a diet rich in legumes, Brussels sprouts, spinach, asparagus, strawberries, oranges and orange juice to increase folate levels. To increase iron intake, eat lean beef, turkey, chicken, steamed clams, whole-grain bread and tofu.

    Risk Factors

    • "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women" says that pregnant women have a one in 10 chance of developing RLS. Conditions that cause nerve damage in the legs, such as lumbar disk disease or diabetes, also can lead to RLS.

    Warning

    • If RLS begins to affect your sleep, work or everyday activities, discuss treatment options with your physician. In addition to supplements, your doctor may prescribe medication therapy.
