Rheumatologists are doctors with specialized training in diseases such as arthritis and other musculoskeletal and autoimmune disease and conditions. They manage and treat up to 100 different diseases of these types.

    • Rheumatologists treat disease such as arthritis, and other diseases affecting joints, bones and muscles. Often these conditions have an autoimmune component, in which the immune system has stopped functioning normally. Diseases treated by rheumatologists include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, bursitis, vasculitis, fibromyalgia and autoimmune diseases.

    • If you have muscular or joint pain and swelling that does not go away after a few days, it may be appropriate to see a rheumatologist. Many rheumatic conditions are difficult to diagnose, and sometimes rheumatologists can come to a diagnosis where other specialists are unable to.

    • Rheumatologists often work in teams with other specialists, so your regular physician may be able to give you a referral. Rheumatologists can also be found through the American College of Rheumatology or the Arthritis Foundation.
