Diet for Hip Bursitis
Bursitis is a medical condition that occurs when fluid-filled sacs, called bursa, become inflamed. The bursa sacs are located within joints. Hip bursitis occurs in the hip joints. Most bursitis is a temporary condition that arises from repetitive use of the joint, which leads to inflammation. Symptoms include stiffness and pain in the joint and swelling around the hip area. There are various treatment options, one of which is a healthy diet, which can include supplements.-
The Proper Diet
-
If you are an active person, you are more likely to have hip bursitis. You can combat and reduce the likelihood of this injury if you consume a healthy diet. Specifically, create a diet that is full of fiber and grains. A healthy diet requires at least six to 11 servings a day of grains. A serving is about a slice of bread, according to Drugs.com. Consume at least 11 servings a day of grain.
Include in your healthy diet the maximum servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. You need at least two to four servings a day of fruit and three to five servings a day of vegetables. A serving of fruit is equivalent to a medium-sized apple or fruit equivalent. A serving of vegetables is about a cup or handful of raw vegetables. Consume higher amounts of dark leafy greens.
Finally, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that you consume large amounts of fatty fish. The fatty-acid oils contained in fish like salmon and mackerel help reduce inflammation in your hip bursitis. Avoid processed foods and refined sugars.
Glucosamine Supplement
-
The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends that you add various supplements to your diet to treat and limit the incidences of hip bursitis. Consider taking glucosamine sulfate, about 500 mg at least two to three times a day. Glucosamine occurs naturally in the cartilage in your body, and increased amounts of it help with cartilage repair. Having healthy cartilage, which is tissue that covers the ends of bones at joints, reduces bursitis inflammation.
Bromelain
-
Bromelain taken in doses of about 250 mg, twice a day, helps reduce inflammation. Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples. Consult with your doctor before taking the supplement because it tends to reduce coagulating (thickening) of the blood. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates that bromelain is a worthwhile addition to your diet to treat hip bursitis and you can increase the effectiveness of bromelain if you consume it with the spice turmeric.
