How to home treat spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a condition that typically affects people over 50, when the spinal canal begins to narrow. This compresses the spinal cord and nearby nerves, resulting in back and leg pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common cause, and it cannot be cured. Conservative measures are usually sufficient to treat this condition, and they can easily be done at home. In some cases, however, surgical intervention might be necessary. Your doctor can provide guidance on how to care for your condition. According to the Mayo Clinic, doctors will give conservative treatments at least three months to work before determining if surgery or more serious measures are necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Exercise regularly. It is one of the most important aspects of self-care. You need to keep your hips and legs strong; this encourages stability and helps you maintain the ability to walk. Talk to your doctor about designing a regimen that is safe and effective. Do not engage in an exercise program without talking to him first.

Use medications that fight both pain and inflammation. Over-the-counter NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), which are sold as aspirin, Advil, Motrin and Aleve, are good choices; take as directed on the product label. If these medications are not providing adequate relief, ask your doctor about stronger options. He might give you a steroid injection or prescribe prescription-strength NSAIDs or other medications to ease the pain.

Work with a physical therapist to increase strength, flexibility and endurance. He can design a home treatment plan to maintain what you accomplished during your sessions.

    • 4

Wear a back brace or corset to support your spine. This is especially beneficial if your abdominal muscles are weak or if you have degeneration in several areas of your spine. Your doctor can help you get one.

    • 5

Find the appropriate balance between rest and activity. Exercise is important, but pushing yourself too much can increase pain and worsen your condition.

    • 6

Lose excess weight if necessary. Extra pounds puts extra pressure on your bones and joints. Being overweight will worsen spinal stenosis.
