What Is Curvature of the Spine?

Natural curves are present in the spine forming an "S" shape. Curvature of the spine is a medical term used to describe abnormalities in the spine, either curving toward the front, backward or sideways.
  1. Types

    • Kyphosis occurs in the top portion of the spine and causes a rounded or hunched back. Another type is lordosis (swayback) which is an inward curve in the middle to lower region causing the buttocks to protrude. Scoliosis is prominent when the curve is sideways and away from the middle.

    Causes

    • The causes of curvature of the spine differ depending on where the curve occurs. Bad posture, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, obesity, congenital (condition present at birth), spinal injuries and genetics are contributing causes of the spinal disorder.

    Diagnosis

    • A physician will perform a full physical assessment of the spine while bending will determine if x-rays are needed. An x-ray can determine the degree of curvature present in the spine.

    Treatment

    • The available treatment options for curvature of the spine include medical observation for any changes, wearing a back brace and surgery. Surgery is the last option and is not suggested unless the curve is more than 50 degrees.

    Risk Factors

    • Individuals which have a familial history of being diagnosed with curvature of the spine and/or a disease which affects the spine are predisposed to having a spinal abnormality.
