Spinal Stenosis Condition & Symptoms
A narrowing of the spine, usually in the upper or lower back, is called spinal stenosis. This condition causes pressure on the spinal cord or nerves and results in pain. There are different types of spinal stenosis.-
Degenerative
-
Degenerative stenosis is when nerve root canals and the spinal canal narrow because of an increase in bone mass. Degenerative stenosis is a result of aging and is very common.
Congenital and Acquired
-
Congenital lumbar stenois is rare and has an onset between the ages of 30 and 40. More common is acquired lumbar spinal stenosis, which usually develops after age 60.
Treatment
-
Spinal stenosis is treated with pain medicine, physical therapy, support devices and rest. If these treatments don't improve the patient's condition, surgery may be performed.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of spinal stenosis begin gradually and get worse. They include leg pain or cramps, neck and shoulder pain and back and hip pain. Other symptoms can include loss of balance.
Complications
-
Spinal stenosis can cause complications such as loss of bladder and bowel control. Other complications include loss of feeling in the legs, feet, hands and arms, and permanent muscle atrophy.
