Sciatica Treatment Options
Sciatica is a condition in which the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, is compressed -- commonly by a herniated disc. Pain can shoot down from the lower hip through the thigh. Sciatica is diagnosed by nerve testing, observation of pain, MRI and x-ray. A variety of treatment options are available from avoiding sudden movements to surgery. Non-invasive procedures work best, as surgery is often not necessary.-
Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy
-
Chiropractors and physical therapists offer non-invasive treatment for sciatic nerve pain. A variety of procedures can occur during a visit, depending on the severity of pain. Using ice and cold therapy decreases inflammation. Ultra sound therapy creates waves of heat that penetrate deep into the skin. The heat can increase circulation and decrease muscle cramping and swelling. Spinal adjustment is a common treatment performed by chiropractors. The adjustments reduces compression of the sciatic nerve. Adjustments should be pain free.
Exercise
-
A physical therapist can teach a variety of exercises that can be performed at home. Exercises will be determined depending on age and physical history. Strengthening and stretching routines to increase flexibility will be taught. How to correct posture and proper ergonomics for sitting, standing and lifting may also be recommended.
Medication Managment
-
Depending on the severity of pain, different drugs will be prescribed. Steroids can be injected near the root of the nerve endings. The effects can cause a patient to be pain free for months, however not all patients respond to the injections the same. Over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen and Aleve can be taken as needed. Muscle relaxants can also be prescribed. Though it may be a surprise, antidepressants can also decrease pain to the sciatic nerve. The medication increases natural endorphins which block pain receptors.
Surgery
-
Surgery is one of the last resorts for sciatic nerve pain, as most patients do well with non-invasive treatment. In a discectomy or microdiscectomy the entire portion of the herniated disc is surgically removed. A laminectomy or laminotomy is a second type of surgical procedure where the lamina is taken out. The lamina is part of the spine that protects the spinal cord and nerves. By removing this portion, more room is given to the sciatic nerve. Recovery can last up to six weeks.
Alternative Medication
-
Acupressure or acupuncture is one common method of alternative medication. Pins are inserted into specific points of the body with acupuncture. For acupressure, the same areas are simply pressed using fingers and hands. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and mental exercises are common forms of biofeedback, an alternative form of treatment. Yoga can occasionally help sciatic nerve syndrome, but can also make it worse. Consult with a doctor before starting any physical fitness program.
