Facts on Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition that is characterized by an unnatural lateral curvature of the spine. If left untreated, it can cause problems with growth, skeletal deformity and can even affect breathing and heart function.
  1. Prevalence

    • Scoliosis affects 6 million people in the United States, according to the National Scoliosis Foundation, with the majority of these being children between the ages of 10 and 15.

    Causes

    • The vast majority of cases of scoliosis are idiopathic, meaning that there is no known cause for the abnormal spinal curvature.

    Treatments

    • Treatments include observation (for mild cases), orthopedic bracing and spinal fusion surgery for moderate to severe curvatures.

    Complications

    • Complications of scoliosis can include impaired lung or heart function, which is caused by pressure from the spine. Additionally, patients may develop a "rib hump," which can become a noticeable deformity.

    Alternative Treatments

    • Some patients choose to pursue alternative treatments for mild scoliosis. These may include physical therapy or chiropractic manipulation, prescribed exercises and electrical stimulation therapy.
