Facts on Scoliosis
-
Prevalence
-
Scoliosis affects 6 million people in the United States, according to the National Scoliosis Foundation, with the majority of these being children between the ages of 10 and 15.
Causes
-
The vast majority of cases of scoliosis are idiopathic, meaning that there is no known cause for the abnormal spinal curvature.
Treatments
-
Treatments include observation (for mild cases), orthopedic bracing and spinal fusion surgery for moderate to severe curvatures.
Complications
-
Complications of scoliosis can include impaired lung or heart function, which is caused by pressure from the spine. Additionally, patients may develop a "rib hump," which can become a noticeable deformity.
Alternative Treatments
-
Some patients choose to pursue alternative treatments for mild scoliosis. These may include physical therapy or chiropractic manipulation, prescribed exercises and electrical stimulation therapy.
