Scoliosis Therapy Treatments
-
Observation
-
Where there is only mild curvature, doctors may choose to simply monitor the condition to ascertain whether it will worsen. In this case, the patient will be examined with accompanying x-rays on a regular basis.
Bracing
-
For moderate to severe scoliosis, (generally curves of 30 degrees or more), a brace may be the treatment of choice. Braces fit tightly around the torso and are designed to keep the condition from worsening during growth.
Electrical Stimulation
-
Electrical stimulation of muscles via implanted or external devices is sometimes used to treat moderate cases of scoliosis. The stimulation induces muscles to pull on the spine, keeping it in its current position.
Spinal Fusion
-
Spinal fusion surgery involves partially straightening one or more curves and fusing them in place with the use of bone grafts and implants, such as rods or pins. Surgery is generally very effective in halting the further progression of idiopathic scoliosis.
Thoracoplasty
-
Thoracoplasty is another type of surgery that is performed in order to correct any noticeable "rib hump" that has occurred as a result of scoliosis and that does not respond to other treatments. This type of surgery can also provide bone to be used in spinal fusions.
