Treatments for Cervical Bone Spurs
-
Rest
-
The most conservative method of treatment for cervical bone spurs is rest, either through activity restriction or at least three days of bed rest. In some cases, a neck brace may be recommended
NSAIDs
-
NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen or aspirin) are commonly used to treat the pain from cervical bone spurs.
Corticosteroids or muscle relaxants
-
In the event that NSAIDs are insufficient to control the pain, some patients may receive muscle relaxants or a shot of corticosteroids in an attempt to relieve swelling, stiffness, and pain.
Surgery
-
In the event that none of the more conservative treatments are effective at controlling cervical bone spur pain, surgery to remove the spur may be recommended.
Alternative Treatments
-
Massage and yoga are sometimes recommended as an alternative treatment, with the goals being to reduce tension in the surrounding muscles and also strengthen the neck to help avoid pain.
