How to Tell If You Have Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a disorder involving a sideways curve of the spine, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. There is no known cause for most cases, and the condition usually develops in late childhood or early adolescence. An X-ray performed by a licensed physician is necessary for a true diagnosis; however, the signs of scoliosis are easy to identify, and can help you decide if you need to see your doctor.

    • 1

If you are female, it is more likely that scoliosis may be present, says the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. Boys and young men develop scoliosis as well, but statistics show that the disorder is more common among girls and young women.

    • 2

When standing or walking, do you have a pronounced lean to the right or left? This is a clear symptom of the disorder.

    • 3

Are the hips situated at the same level on the body? Hips at even slightly different heights on the skeleton are another strong indicator of scoliosis.

    • 4

Look at your back in the mirror. Do you notice a curve either in a C-shape or an S-shape where your back "dents" along the spine? These are the two shapes scoliosis can cause to occur in the spine.

    • 5

Have these signs been present for a only a short time, or are they a long-term thing? Sometimes curvature of the spine is caused short-term by inflammation or having legs of slightly different lengths. Scoliosis, however, may last many years, and may require a doctor's attention.

See your doctor if these signs are apparent. Your doctor may order an X-ray to determine for sure whether scoliosis is the diagnosis or not.
