What Are the Treatments for Mild Scoliosis?

Scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, can be a debilitating condition in its severest form. However, not all cases of scoliosis are severe, and mild cases generally don't require surgery. For milder cases, alternative treatments may provide benefit, although the medical community has not fully determined the extent of these benefits.
  1. Brace

    • The most common treatment for mild scoliosis is the wearing of a back brace. The back brace is usually made from plastic and metal and forces the spine into the correct position and posture.

    Massage

    • Manipulation of the muscles through massage is used in scoliosis treatment because tight muscles can pull on the vertebrae of the spine.

    Chiropractic

    • Chiropractic adjustments treat scoliosis by physically putting the vertebrae of the spine back into correct alignment quickly, rather than over time.

    Exercsise

    • Exercises treat scoliosis by stretching out the ligaments and muscles attached to the spine and improving blood flow. The best exercises are those that are low-impact and isometric.

    Electro-Stimulation

    • In this treatment a mild current is allowed to run through the muscles around the affected area. This is believed to activate and strengthen the muscles needed to correct the curvature in the spine.

    Physical Therapy

    • Physical therapy for scoliosis typically involves doing stretches to counter the curve of the spine and strengthen the muscles needed for correct posture. It often is combined with an exercise regimen.
