How to Use Electrical Stimulation to Manage Scoliosis

Electrical stimulation has been used in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis, which is a type of adolescent scoliosis that presents itself while a child is still growing. Over the last 20 years, the success of electrical stimulation has been heavily debated among specialists. Some doctors believe that it can help prevent the progression of scoliosis over time.

Instructions

  1. Know How it Works

    • 1

Apply skin electrodes to the muscles between the ribs, directly under the arm. A physical therapist trained in electrical stimulation will perform this procedure. The electrodes are placed here so that the maximum amount of muscle contraction occurs at the greatest point of the skeletal curve.

    • 2

Prepare to perform electrical stimulation at night, while the patient is asleep. The electrical stimulation can last for up to eight hours.

    • 3

Take x-rays of the spine regularly to assess whether the spinal curve is still progressing or if the curvature has stabilized. This is very important in order to manage scoliosis effectively, since growth spurts can increase the rate at which scoliosis progresses and these can happen very quickly.

    • 4

Know that if the curvature continues to progress despite electrical stimulation, it may be necessary to wear a brace and perform back exercises to manage the scoliosis more effectively.

    • 5

Be prepared to have the electrical stimulation performed at your own home. This will be most comfortable for your child.
