How to Know When Orthotics Wear Out

Orthotics are devices inserted into shoes to increase comfort and arch support. Depending on the person's lifestyle and the materials used to make the orthotics, the supports can last six months to 10 years or longer. Users may also need to replace custom-made orthotics when they no longer fit properly because of changes in foot size or shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the orthotic for any sagging or cracking. The device should be firm and intact.

    • 2

Place the orthotic in a pair of comfortable shoes and go through your normal walking patterns and daily exercises. A broken-in orthotic should feel comfortable and should never cause pain, bruising or blistering. If your shoes are in poor condition, however, you may need to replace the shoes rather than the orthotics.

    • 3

Take the orthotics to your podiatrist every six months to a year. She will be able to assess their condition and replace the lining and cushioning if necessary.
