Children with a predisposition toward scoliosis should be checked by a physician. Seek advice from your physician if you suffer from a connective tissue disorder, such as Marfan syndrome, or a neuro-muscular disorder, such as cerebral palsy, poliomyelitis or myopathy. These conditions increase the likelihood of developing scoliosis. Your physician will carry out a physical examination, which will help determine any degree of curvature. This may help predict any future development of the condition.

Consult your doctor, and ask to be referred to a specialist if you have a family history of this condition, as there does seem to be a genetic link. There is no known connection between scoliosis and athletic activity, carrying weights or carrying out manual work. If your physician suspects scoliosis, he will order an X-ray of the spine, which will determine the extent of the curvature.

Seek a referral to a physiotherapist if you have scoliosis. Physical exercise will not prevent or reverse the condition. However, correctly directed exercise will improve your muscle strength and posture. This will maximize your well being and may help to prevent the pain sometimes associated with scoliosis. Wear a brace if this is advised, as it sometimes is for scoliosis of medium severity.
