Proper Body Posture
Good posture involves aligning your spine with the least strain on your muscles and ligaments while standing, sitting or lying down. Proper body posture significantly helps reduce the occurrence of back and neck pain.-
Standing
-
While standing, your spine is properly aligned when the natural curves of your back allow your ears, shoulders, hips, and knees to line up. Engaging your core muscles will also help you align your spine and support your back.
Sitting
-
As you sit in a chair, honor the natural curves of your spine. Shoulders should be back and your head should be above your shoulders. Have your bottom touch the back of your chair. Feet should be flat on the ground or supported on a footrest.
Lying Down
-
Make sure your pillow's thickness allows for the natural curve in your cervical spine. Maintain the natural thoracic and lumbar curves by lying on your back while supporting your knees and your lower back with an extra pillow or lumbar roll. If you sleep on your side, keep your knees somewhat bent.
