Bicycling With Avascular Necrosis
Avascular necrosis is a disorder resulting from lost blood supply to a bone, causing the death of the part of the bone which lacked blood supply. Bones are made up of tissues which need a supply of oxygen and nutrients just like other body parts. Avascular necrosis affects the joints around the bone as well - most commonly the hip joint and the knee. The best exercises to deal with this disorder are range of motion exercises to keep joints moving, and low-impact cardio exercises such as swimming and biking. Exercise is crucial so that joints and muscles don't become stiff, causing more pain.Things You'll Need

1
Speak with your doctor or health care provider about whether bicycling is the best exercise for you, and what kind of exercise you can handle with your avascular necrosis and any other health conditions. Have a physical to ensure that you are healthy enough to proceed with bicycling.
-
2
Consult a physical therapist for guidance in planning an exercise schedule and choosing the appropriate exercises to do in addition to biking. Choose exercises that work on range of motion and flexibility in order to prevent stiffening of joints, which causes pain.
-
3
Begin bicycling slowly to get in shape. Continue to speak with your therapist and doctor as you slowly increase the duration of your exercises and the intensity of your workouts. Monitor any pain or aching in your affected joints and report them to your doctor and therapist.
-
4
Schedule a follow-up physical with your doctor after bicycling for a few weeks or months. Talk about how you have been feeling, if you feel better or worse, and if it is helping to loosen your joints and keep you fit. Consult your therapist to make any changes in your exercise routine, if need be.
