How to Identify Two Superficial Infections of the Skin Caused by Fungi

Superficial fungal infections of the skin are extremely common and can often be identified by several factors: location, shape, color and severity of symptoms. Two of the most common infections are "pityriasis versicolor" and "tinea pedis."

Pityriasis versicolor is very common and is mostly found on the trunk and upper extremities. It can present as well on children's faces. Tinea pedis (also known as "athletes foot") is the most common type of fungal infection and is found generally on the feet.

Pityriasis (or tinea) versicolor can affect any sex in all geographic regions. It is more commonly seen in regions that have a higher temperature and humidity level. Although it can affect anyone, conditions such as Cushing's disease, immunosuppression, malnutrition and those on oral contraceptives may be at an increased risk.

Identify pityriasis versicolor by the following: It is found on the trunk or the upper extremities. It is slightly flat, consists of one or more small, rounded bumps, is coin shaped and may run together. Color may range from white to reddish brown, and it may be itchy.

Tinea pedis (althetes foot) is the most common type of fungal infection.

Tinea pedis (also known as athletes foot) is found, most commonly, on the feet between the webbing on the toes. It may also invade the toenails and the soles. It is experienced in patients who have come in contact with a moist environment either by physically stepping in moisture or by wearing restrictive clothing that has, by default, created its own trapped moisture cavity.

Identify tinea pedis by the following: itching; stinging; burning toes or soles; excessive dryness on the bottom and sides of the feet; and cracking, peeling skin between the toes. If tinea pedis has invaded the toe nails, thickening of the nail and pulling away from the nail bed may result.

Pityriasis is often treated with Selsun shampoo or Nizoral, and a huge variety of over-the-counter creams are available for tinea pedis. Properly identifying a common skin infection can relieve worry and lead to a simple, often inexpensive solution.
