Derma Swim Ingredients

DermaSwim helps minimize the effects on a swimmer's skin from chlorine, a chemical that is widely used to prevent bacterial growth in swimming pools and hot tubs. Marketed as a pre-swimming lotion, DermaSwim contains ingredients that help to create a waterproof barrier between the skin and the chlorinated water. Apply all over the body before entering the water to help prevent dry skin, itching and a chlorine odor.

  1. Stearic Acid

    • Many animal and vegetable oils contain stearic acid, which is a saturated fatty acid. However, it is found more commonly in animal fats. Stearic acid remains firm and is considered a waxy solid. This property makes it useful in spreads, margarines and cream bases for food items, as well as in health and beauty products.

    Beeswax

    • Beeswax comes from the honeycomb of a beehive and is a byproduct of beekeeping. Beeswax is the wax that surrounds the honey in the comb. Beeswax is very stable and can withstand high temperatures without changing its chemical equation. Chemists can use beeswax to create a waterproof, protective paste by mixing it with olive or mineral oil.

    Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)

    • Butylated Hydroxytoluene, or BHT, is a distant relative of Vitamin E that serves as a food additive and preservative. Patented in 1947, it received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for use in 1954. It is most commonly used as an antioxidant in foods that contain fat. In addition to the normal effects of antioxidants on foods, BHT antioxidants also terminate the chain reactions that can damage skin cells. Although some have questioned the safety of BHT, medical research shows that applying it to the skin in the amounts present in cosmetics and creams poses no danger.

    Mineral Oil

    • Mineral oil, a byproduct of petroleum, can serve as a waterproof coating to skin. The waterproof properties provide a protective covering, and applying a thin layer of mineral oil to the skin can assist in rehydrating and reducing moisture loss. The most well-known form of mineral oil is petroleum jelly.
