1
Wash your anal area thoroughly. If you use soap, use a very mild, gentle variety that does not contain colors or fragrances. Pat your skin dry with a soft cloth.

2
Wash your hands well and dry them.

3
Apply a pea-sized amount of ointment to the external area of the fissure. Use your finger to gently spread the ointment on the affected area. Wash your hands well again when you are finished.

Apply internal ointments if you have a prescription from your doctor; these ointments are designed to heal internal tissues affected by fissures. Some of these ointments come in suppository form. In this case, you gently insert the suppository into your anus. Try to wait at least 30 minutes before using the restroom so that you receive maximum benefit from the ointment. Other prescription ointments come with a cone-shaped applicator. You simply screw the applicator onto the tube of ointment and gently insert the tip of the applicator into your anus. Then you squeeze gently to release a small amount of ointment.

Use other healing methods along with ointments for best results. Other methods of healing fissures include taking warm baths, each a fiber-rich diet and drinking plenty of water.
