How to Loosen Nits From Hair

Nits are the eggs of lice. Lice are parasites that infect the body and live on the blood of the host. Lice are easily spread in close contact so they are very contagious. This problem is prevalent in schools, but workplaces and homes are areas where lice spread. While there are insecticide shampoos that kill lice and nits in the hair and scalp, these products are toxic. A better solution is to physically remove and loosen the nits from the hair.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 3 tablespoons of lice shampoo into a bowl. The shampoo has insecticides that kill the nits and lice.

    • 2

Place head under a sink faucet or stand under a shower head. Turn on warm water to completely wet the hair.

    • 3

Comb through the wet hair with a metal nit comb. Nit combs are small-tooth combs that remove nits from the hair and scalp. Nits resemble the buds on the pussy willow tree, soft-looking and round.

    • 4

Scrape the nit comb against the side of the container so the nits fall into the lice shampoo. This is the best way to kill the nits after loosening and removing them from the hair.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 1 to 4 every four days to remove any new nits that appear.

    • 6

Continue with this removal process for at least two weeks to make certain all the nits are gone.
