How to Treat a Painful Pimple on the Face

Acne occurs when skin pores get clogged because of oil and dead skin. When these pores become infected, a pimple forms. Sometimes if the pimple is large or swollen, it can be painful. While you might be tempted to try to pop the pimple or touch it, avoid doing so because this can make the pimple worse. There are many acne treatment myths you should avoid. These include drying your face in the sun -- this only creates more dry skin flakes to clog the pores.

Instructions

    • 1

Place ice on the painful pimple twice a day to reduce swelling and ease pain. Leave the ice on only for a few moments.

    • 2

Wash your face twice a day with a soft rag and plain water. Avoid rough rags and harsh chemicals.

    • 3

Apply a product containing 2.5% benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid twice a day after washing, gently with your fingers.

    • 4

Drink eight glasses of water to keep your skin hydrated and avoid acne. Do not eat food with iodides. Foods containing iodides can cause acne to flair up. Some of these foods include potato chips, fast food and excessive dairy.

Visit a dermatologist if you're still experiencing painful acne. Your dermatologist can prescribe acne medications that are stronger than over-the-counter medications. If your acne still doesn't respond, your dermatologist can drain a pimple. Do not attempt to drain, or "pop," a pimple at home.
