How to Protect a Small Sore in the Tanning Bed
If you use tanning beds, it is important that you protect any sores or blisters, whether or not the sores or blisters were caused by exposure to the sun or artificial light. No matter where the sore is located on the body, it should be protected from the ultraviolet A and B rays emitted by tanning bulbs. Exposing sores or blisters in the tanning bed can exacerbate the wounds and even cause infection.Instructions

1
Apply sunscreen to the sore. According to University of Iowa Health Care, sun damage and tanning beds can cause sores and blisters as well as exacerbate existing sores and blisters. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (skin protection factor) of 30 or higher that blocks ultraviolet A and B rays. Both UV-A and UV-B rays can cause damage to the skin.

Cover the wound to protect it from exposure to the tanning bed's rays. Wear a piece of clothing over the wound for maximum protection. Synthetics offer more protection than cotton, as the fabric is less penetrable. If you do not want to wear clothing in the tanning bed, cover the sore with a band aid or tape it with a piece of gauze.

Avoid breaking any blisters. Blisters develop to protect damaged skin from bacteria and other infections. Once blisters open on their own, apply an antibiotic ointment to them two to three times a day. It is especially important to treat blisters appropriately if you tan, as tanning beds may not be properly sanitized.

Thoroughly sanitize the tanning bed before and after use. Bacteria and infections on the tanning bed can aggravate sores and cause infection. The signs of infection are increased pain, redness and thick, yellow discharge. If your sore develops any of these signs, immediately suspend tanning bed use and allow the sore to fully heal.
