Why Do Women Get Cellulite?

Cellulite is a skin condition in which there is a dimpling texture to the skin of the thighs, buttocks and lower abdomen. Cellulite is small pockets of fat under the skin that protrude into the skin, giving a bumpy appearance.
  1. Pinch Cellulite

    • Pinch, or compression, cellulite is visible when a woman crosses her legs. This type of cellulite is due to the total compression of the fat pockets. Pinch cellulite is gender-specific and occurs in women regardless of age or weight.

    Weight

    • While cellulite occurs in slender women, size certainly plays a role in the appearance of cellulite. Overweight women carry an increased amount of fat making the cellulite more visible than a slender woman who is carrying less fat and who has more muscle tone.

    Age

    • As women age, the connective tissue of our skin becomes looser, and collagen and elasticity decreases. This process allows for the pockets of fat to push further into the skin, resulting in an increased visibility of cellulite.
