Why Do People Wake Up With Bags Under Their Eyes?

Bags under the eyes are generally not a cause for worry. There are several common causes for the unsightly swelling to occur, along with several ways to treat them to alleviate the puffiness.
  1. Definition

    • Bags under the eyes are due to swelling in the delicate and thin tissue directly below the eye. While they may not look very nice, they are generally not serious. Fluid accumulates, giving the appearance of a swelled area that may also appear dark.

    Reason

    • There are several causes for this swelling to occur. As the human body ages, the skin becomes saggy, allowing the fat that is normally distributed around the eye to migrate forward and under. Fluid can also accumulate in this area, especially due to lack of sleep, allergies, skin conditions, fluid retention due to weather changes and hormone levels and heredity. Sleeping flat on the back can contribute to bags under the eyes, as it forces fluid to pool in certain areas.

    Treatment

    • Most cases of under-eye bags do not need serious medical treatment. Getting enough sleep, reducing salt intake, taking allergy medication and sleeping on the side or with the head raised, can all help to reduce the swelling. Medical treatment for severe cases includes laser treatments, chemical peels and eyelid surgery to remove excess fat and skin.
