Instructions

  1. Hot Compress

    • 1

Soak a towel or cloth in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 2

Squeeze the water out and dab the towel on the lips. Apply this hot compress within the first 24 hours of the lip swelling. The heat helps decrease swelling by disbursing the blood accumulation in the lips.

    • 3

Soak a tea bag in warm water for a few minutes. Remove the tea bag and cool it down before applying it to the lips for a few minutes.

    Cold Compress

    • 4

Wrap ice cubes in a cloth and press it against the lips for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 5

Wait 10 to 15 minutes and then reapply the cold compress to your lips.

    • 6

Alternate applying and removing the cold compress in 10- to 15-minute intervals.

    • 7

Repeat this alternation two or three times daily but no more than four times a day.

    Natural Remedies

    • 8

Apply tea tree oil or the gel of an Aloe vera leaf two to three times a day to help reduce lip swelling.

    • 9

Grate a potato and apply its juice to the lips. This helps to heal any cuts on the lip that cause swelling.

    • 10

Mix drops of peppermint or lavender essential oil with either olive, coconut, sunflower or pumpkin oil. Apply this mixture to the lips to treat cuts in the area.

Also try arnica oil or castor oil on the lips for added soothing and healing effects.

    • 11

Mix honey, butter and the pulp of an apple to form a paste. Spread this on the lips and leave for 30 minutes before washing it off with water. This helps reduce swelling and soothes the lips.

    • 12

Combine a dash of turmeric powder with a teaspoon of glycerin and apply it on the lips for speedy healing effects.

    • 13

Gargle with a warm, salt water solution twice daily to speed the healing process of cuts that may cause lip swelling.

    Medication

    • 14

Apply medical oils which provide relief from swelling caused by conditions such as cold sores or sunburn. They also treat symptoms associated with swelling such as chapped lips and blisters.

    • 15

Use medicated ointments to heal cuts on the lips that lead to swelling.

    • 16

Take oral antihistamine medications that treat symptoms of allergic reactions including lip swelling.
