How far under the skin is subcutaneous tissue?

The thickness of the subcutaneous tissue layer varies considerably from person to person and from site to site on the body. On the abdomen and back, it may be as thin as 1 millimeter, while on the buttocks and thighs it may be as thick as 10 centimeters. The average thickness is about 5 centimeters.
