1
Visit with your doctor if you have signs of petechiae. Petechiae can be a symptom of numerous life-threatening conditions, including leukemia, a type of blood cancer. Meningitis can also cause petechiae.
-
2
Undergo any necessary testing. Your doctor may order blood tests and X-rays to determine the cause of petechiae. A spinal tap may be necessary if meningitis is suspected.
-
3
Receive treatment for the underlying condition. Your doctor will prescribe a treatment plan or refer you to a specialist to treat the cause of your petechiae.
-
4
Take an antibiotic. If your petachiae is due to infection, take antibiotics as directed by your physician.
-
5
Apply ice to the area of your body affected by petachiae. Apply ice for 20 minutes at a times during the first 24 hours that you notice the appearance of petachiae. Ice should be applied no more than 20 minutes per hour. Ice can help reduce the development of petachiae.
